“Americana” is one of those things where you know it when you see it, even if you can’t quite describe it. Chinos and penny loafers for a classic “Ivy” look? Raw denim, a waxed jacket, work boots and a watch cap? A navy suit? It’s all of the above.

In style, something "quintessentially American” isn’t one particular garment or design aesthetic. Like those who call this place home, it is the sum of many parts: e Pluribus Unum: Of out many, one. Indeed, as America approaches its semiquincentennial, it seems an appropriate time to launch a special edition Americana sock to celebrate not only where we’ve been, but where we’re going.

The Americana Sock

The Americana Sock At a Glance

The American Flag dress sock has been a staple in the Boardroom sock stable for many years now. We’re proud to continue to produce it. But, we wanted to create a variation to honor America’s 250th anniversary with a design both patriotic and easy to style.

The navy is a foundational color for the modern wardrobe. It is, perhaps, a little less jarring and more intentional than red or white. This allows for the accented white stars and red to both pop and work cohesively with the base rather than compete with it. This results in a palette that’s far from a novelty and works with all facets of American style, from a suited look to a well-worn pair of jeans.

It’s available in our exceptionally soft cotton blend and finished with a machine-linked toe for flat-seamed comfort.

Dressing Up A Patriotic Sock

One of the hallmarks of a Boardroom sock is that less is very much more. From stripes to knots, dots, and-yes- American flags, we believe garish and overly loud designs attract the wrong kind of attention. Items in your closet, from jackets to hosiery, should be complementary. Patriotic patterns can be a little tricky. When done poorly, they can get costume-y pretty quick. But, much like any tie or pocket square, the sock becomes an appropriate accent when surrounded by classic menswear staples.

Take the look below. The navy jacket, grey trousers, and the university-striped shirt anchored by some black Oxfords is a classic ‘menswear uniform.’ If you were standing across the room, you might not even notice the pattern on the sock.

But, that’s part of the magic of this outfit. Only when you get a little closer do the red and white details begin to reveal themselves and the pattern rewards a second look. It shows you’ve put a little more thought into this. Indeed, it’s a subtle nod to classic Americana you can wear to the office, a client dinner, or any public event.

Americana Socks for Business Casual

Business Casual styling is a natural habitat for a sock like this. But, the definition of what that is has changed dramatically in the last decade. As jackets, ties and, yes, even pocket squares, have fallen out of favor, many offices have reverted to a far more relaxed approach to dress. That’s created quite the sartorial challenge for those who want to dress down without looking slovenly or lazy. But, this is where a patterned sock of any kind can do some hard work for you.

Above, the khaki trouser and the darker brown loafer build a foundation both warm and approachable. The navy base complements the brown tones in both the shoes and pants, and the patterns provide enough visual interest to keep the outfit from looking too safe or basic. But, again, nothing is dominating the outfit or competing too much with anything else. Like a lot of Americana, it just works, even if you can’t put your finger on why.

Weekend Wear

Now, long before anyone coined the phrase ‘business casual’, American workwear was built on practical garments designed to be worn hard and often. Heavy denim, roughout leather footwear, and a wool shirt jacket all share that heritage. It shouldn't be surprising these pair well with jeans.

What works especially well about this combination is the contrast between the lighter denim and the darker sock. Too dark on the denim would be quite ‘matchy-matchy.’ While, sometimes, that’s certainly what you’d want in an outfit- uniformity elongates the leg line and can make one appear taller and leaner. But, in this case, I don’t mind the difference.

The indigo and navy appear connected and intentional, and the colored details add some texture and personality a solid navy sock wouldn’t. The cuff on the jean showcases the pattern, yes, but it becomes part of the outfit rather than the focal point. As the Marquis de Lafayette might say, it’s a certain je ne sai quoi that makes the finished product that much better.

American Manufacturing

American style, and perhaps patriotism, has always been more than a flag, symbol, or other talisman. At its best, it’s a celebration of craft, tradition, utility, and quality enduring long after ephemeral fads have come and gone. It’s part of the reason American manufacturing remains so vital to our experiment in democracy.

For generations, textile mills and factories helped grow and sustain communities across this country, producing garments designed to be worn for years rather than seasons. Here at Boardroom Socks, we’re proud to continue that tradition. Each pair is made right here, supporting American workers and preserving a craft that’s been part our nation’s story.

As we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, it feels fitting to do so with a product that draws inspiration from our past, but looks forward to our future.

Thanks, always, for reading.

Yours in Style,
