What made James Dean so cool? Sure, he had a great car, great hair, and rolled his cigarettes in a certain way. But, he wore jeans in a way that no else had before. They were comfortable. And, they were versatile: He wore them with everything. It’s easy to fill a closet with cheap, loud, synthetic pieces that don’t go with one another. It’s harder to find something that works across wardrobes and formalities, from a more suited look to an easy weekend getup. But when you do, you’ll come back again and again.
That extends to your socks, too. A good sock should be a workhorse and look great with about any pair of pants. Our denim heather style fits the bill and bridges the formality gap beautifully.

If I’ve written it before, I’ve written it a hundred times: versatility should be one of the central tenets of the modern wardrobe. This goes for anything from suits to jeans and everything in-between. In an era where we tend to dress down more than we dress up, having a piece that easily transitions between work and play is more important now than perhaps at any time in recent memory.
Versatility matters for styling. Have you ever noticed that, out of all the items in your closet, you really only rotate between 15 and 20 of them? And, they seem to follow a similar color scheme and pattern? If so, that’s great! Whether you know it or not, you’re developing an interchangeable wardrobe. Most everything in there should work with most everything else.
This transposable approach works for your hosiery drawer as well. A pair of blue socks, made with good quality materials and in a highly versatile colorway (like our denim heather) is easy to both dress up and down.
These socks hold their own in today’s business environment. While it may not be the first choice with a pair of non-brogued cap-toes or, perhaps, a wholecut shoe, they're actually perfect to pair with shoes that have a little more going on. Take, for example, the black Oxford below.
While the shoe has a bit of polish on it, it’s not an ultra-shiny, patent-leather style finish. The decorative broguing brings the stuffiness down a notch or two, making it easy to style with this kind of sock. Much like the shoe, the sock adds some visual interest without being overly flashy.

This approach extends to dark brown and even oxblood loafers, too. That’s especially true in a boardroom if the loafers are smooth leather and a slightly elongated, almond-shaped toe box. That shape is a little sleeker and easier to dress but. But, again, the sock balances the formality well.
A denim toned sock works beautifully for business and ‘smart’ casual, too. They’re the perfect sock for the modern hybrid office setting. It’s a fun, but not too funky, way to add some texture to the modern menswear ‘uniform’ of a navy blazer or sports jacket and grey flannel trousers. Conversely, it’s a way to throw some visual interest into a part of chinos and button-down Oxford.
One of the ‘unwritten rules’ of consulting (an industry I’ve been in at a few different points in my career) is always dress one level of formality higher than the clients you’re serving. While many may hate to admit it, jeans and a polo shirt could pass for a business lunch outfit. You can do better. But, to not outdress the client too much, the denim heather sock is an easy win and a highly effective KPI.
While denim jeans have been a workwear staple for, literally, over a century, they really didn’t make its way into the general population until after the Second World War, when GIs and sailors kept wearing them after they returned stateside. The pants became a symbol of youth, freedom, and rebellion. James Dean wore them everywhere. Marilyn Monroe would slip into a pair and change their status from cardboard-y leg irons to sensual shapewear.

All this is to say, of course, it should come as no surprise a denim-toned sock is easier to style than just about anything.
They’re at home with white leather sneakers, canvas shoes, and even some chunkier, New Balance-style trainers. Try them, too, with some stone chinos, a polo shirt, and unstructured chukka or desert boots in a sandy suede. Think Daniel Craig’s James Bond in Casino Royale. It’s the effortless ‘easy button’, but it instantly elevates an otherwise casual look.
Our denim heather socks are easy to style whether you elevate them to suit status or wear them with your favorite Levi’s. They’re made of the best yarn we can find, and the blend of nylon ensures they’ll stay whether you wear them mid length (as I prefer) or over-the-calf. And, as always, they’re made right here in the Southeastern United States from the finest imported and domestic yarns.
